Process Situation
The Waupun Utility District supplies water to the nearly 11,000 residents of the town of Waupun, as well as several state correctional facilities in the surrounding area. Due to presence of dissolved calcium and magnesium, Waupun’s water is relatively hard and requires softening. Additionally, iron and manganese in the raw water calls for treatment to assure the Utilities ability to comply with the appropriate MCL’s. The Utilities’ existing facility had become outdated and was being challenged to produce the required daily capacity. A new central treatment and softening facility was proposed to utilize Manganese Greensand filters for iron and manganese removal, followed by RO membranes for softening. A beautiful new octagonal shape building was designed and constructed to house the 2.9 MGD facility and includes room for the future addition of a third process train. Upon completion of the new facility, the existing facility was demolished.
Roberts Solution
During the design stage, Roberts performed an extensive pilot study to demonstrate the removal efficiency of the Roberts process and to provide feed water for the membrane pilot units. Multiple treatment processes were evaluated ahead of the membrane systems. However the Roberts pressure filters out performed other systems and provided the efficient and effective solution for the utility. Following the successful pilot, the process design was completed around Roberts’ horizontal pressure filters and the selected membrane supplier.
Benefits
Using the Roberts’ Horizontal Pressure Filters eliminated the need for extensive site excavation during construction. This minimized the impact of the new plant’s construction on the existing facility which needed to remain in operation through completion of the new facility. The Horizontal Pressure Filters each contain four (4) independent cells. The two (2) 4 cell units operate in a lead / lag configuration with one horizontal pressure filter used during a 24 run cycle. Treated water is generated by the second unit to backwash the lead filter at the completion of the run. The lead/lag filters are flipped and the clean unit which just completed the run cycle becomes the lag filter and is prepared to wash the lead unit at the completion of the following run.
